In 1986 the Spanish Government took the decision to build the NAFA (New Rail Access to Andalusia) under international recognition and chose the high speed travel system. By undertaking this a whole new concept of travel evolved, with a client based design and with the end result of offering quality service. The AVE, high speed train service, is presently made up of two products: the AVE and the Talgo 200, both of which are characterized by punctuality, speed, frequency, services provided on board and an array of pricing adapted to client needs.

AVE trains carry two main engines, situated at the end of train, with eight passenger cars, an auto-wagon/coach and a cafeteria car. Passenger capacity of each train is 320 seats distributed in three different classes: Club Class, 30 seats, Preference Class seating 78 and Tourist which holds 212. The Tourist section also provides a disabled area where one can travel in ones own wheelchair.
At present 19 scheduled trips, in both directions are being offered, additional routes have been added from Friday to Sunday in order to meet customer demand. The Talgo 200 train provides 6 scheduled routes each way on a daily basis from Seville to Madrid and Malaga. These trains have one locomotive, a cafeteria car and 9 passenger cars: 7 Tourist Class and 2 Preference Class cars. This train holds 292 travelers; 52 Preference and 240 Tourist travelers.

Since 1993, the Talgo 200 trains use the AVE tracks during most of the journey. This has allowed to reduce the length of the trips, while increasing passenger comfort. As a final note, we'd like to mention RENFE (Red Nacional de Ferrocarriles Españoles) "Commitment to Punctuality", introduced with the launching of the AVE in September, 1994. This states that full reimbursement of all tickets shall be made if the train arrives more than 5 minutes behind schedule.
